Our first New Year’s entrance into true madness with the Homestead Grays resulted in the demolition of a statue of the baby Jesus. The manager of said residence wrote a letter pleading for restitution for our collective shocking brutal act. We ignored it. In his letter he wailed, and I quote, “You broke the baby Jesus”, referring to the baby Jesus in the nativity set.

And then the manager called Chuck Mead, and said, “Chuck, you said it would be cool…” and Chuck said, “Man, it was cool. you should have been there…”

Yeah, that was a brutal night. Great gig, room well in excess of code. It was at a hotel ballroom, and I remember the manager’s letter well. I don’t remember the amount of damages the guy asked for, but his letter mentioned numerous heinous acts, plus a broken dance floor and several holes in the walls. We brought the full art of the frenzy that night, and I remember looking out into the audience at one point and thinking that being on stage was probably the safest place.

You are so right Vern. The stage was the safest place. In all my days I never saw a place so wrecked. It was a janitor’s nightmare. A very famous fun thrilled evening for sure.

And then the proceeds were stolen by the doorman, later recovered by the local fuzz in one night… glorious.
